Cart abandonment sits around 70% across ecommerce. That number is not a crisis and it is not going to zero — a proportion of people add to cart as a way of bookmarking. The addressable part is smaller and more specific.
What people actually say
Read that list again with one thing in mind: almost every item is information that arrived too late.
The fix is upstream
Show delivery cost before the decision. On the product page, not at checkout. If you have a free-shipping threshold, say what it is and how far away the customer is from it.
Give a delivery date, not a window. "Arrives Thursday 2 October" beats "3–5 business days" by a wide margin, especially for anything bought for an occasion.
Offer guest checkout. Requiring an account to spend money is asking a favour at the worst moment.
Show accepted payment methods early. Someone who expects a particular wallet and does not see it may not proceed, and will never tell you why.
The test we would apply to any proposed cart fix: could this information have been given on the product page instead? If yes, do that — it prevents the abandonment rather than chasing it.
What recovery email can and cannot do
It can recover the genuinely distracted — people who intended to buy and got interrupted. A three-message sequence over about three days typically recovers a modest but worthwhile share.
It cannot recover someone who left because shipping doubled the price. That person did not forget; they decided. Sending them the same total again in an email does not change the arithmetic.
What to measure instead of the headline rate
Split it. Cart abandonment and checkout abandonment are different. Someone who added to cart and never started checkout was probably browsing. Someone who started checkout and did not finish hit a specific obstacle, and that number should be much lower — if it is above roughly 30%, something concrete is wrong.
Talk it through
Send us your cart and checkout abandonment split.
Those two numbers together tell us which of these is actually happening on your store, and we will tell you where the fix sits — usually earlier than you expect.

One thing worth trying this week
Go through your own checkout on a phone as a new customer, paying with a method you do not normally use, buying something that costs enough to make shipping matter.
Most abandonment causes are invisible to the person who configured the store, and that exercise surfaces them faster than any report.
