Travel & Logistics

Travel and logistics are not really ecommerce. Inventory is availability, pricing is dynamic, and the transaction is often an enquiry rather than a checkout. That usually means custom, not a theme.

What is different about this category

The defining difference is that you are not selling a stock item at a fixed price. A tour on a given date, a shipment on a given lane, a vehicle in a given window — each has availability, variable pricing and a booking flow with more steps than a cart. Forcing that into a standard ecommerce checkout is where most of these projects go wrong.

Where it gets hard

The problems this category actually has.

Each one is the same shape: the version that leaks money on the left, the version that converts on the right.

Inventory is availability, not stock

Two people cannot book the same seat on the same date. Availability logic, holds and calendar rules are the core of the build, and no theme ships with them.

Pricing moves

Season, group size, route, duration and lead time all shift the number. Pricing has to be computed rather than stored, and it has to stay explainable to the customer.

The transaction is a conversation

Many bookings begin as an enquiry — dates, passengers, requirements — and complete over email or phone. Losing that context between the site and the sales team costs the booking.

Trust is high-stakes

People are committing travel plans or freight to you. Cancellation terms, insurance and operator credentials are not fine print; they are part of the decision.

How we build for it

What we do differently here.

Each one shown as it runs on a store we built — not an illustration of the idea.

01

Build the availability model first

Calendars, capacity and holds designed before any interface, because everything else depends on them being right.

02

Make dynamic pricing legible

Rules computed server-side and presented so the customer understands why the number is what it is. Unexplained price changes destroy trust in this category faster than a high price does.

03

Treat the enquiry as a first-class flow

Structured multi-step enquiries that reach the sales team with the context intact, rather than a contact form that throws it away.

04

Put the terms where the decision is

Cancellation, insurance and operator credentials surfaced at the point of commitment, not buried in a policy page.

Common questions

Travel & Logistics, answered.

Sometimes, and we will say so when it can — a fixed-date, fixed-price tour sells fine as a Shopify product. But once you need real availability, holds and computed pricing, Shopify starts costing more in workarounds than a custom build costs outright. We would rather have that conversation at the start than at month four.

Yes — where an API exists. A large part of these projects is the integration layer: availability, rates and confirmations moving reliably between your site and whatever system runs operations.

Visible wherever you can make it honest. Hiding price qualifies out serious buyers as effectively as unserious ones, and in logistics it reads as evasion. Where the number genuinely depends on route, weight or date, show the range and the variables that move it — that earns more enquiries than a blank form does.

Specifics that can be checked. Named customers, licence or registration numbers, a real timeline, and a plain statement of what happens if something goes wrong. High-value, high-consequence purchases are decided on whether the seller looks accountable, and accountability reads as detail rather than adjectives.

Longer than an ecommerce build — typically 10 to 20 weeks depending on the availability and pricing rules. The variance is almost always in those two things, so we scope them before quoting rather than after.
