Most Shopify stores put serious effort into the homepage and the product page and leave the collection page as whatever the theme shipped. Which is odd, because for any store with more than about fifteen products the collection page is where the decision actually gets made.
It is a filtering tool, not a gallery
A visitor landing on a collection has a rough idea what they want and needs to narrow. Everything on the page either helps that or gets in the way.
Filters that match how people think. Not your internal taxonomy. In supplements that is goal and format, not product type. In fashion it is size availability and occasion. If the filters do not include the attribute people choose on, they will not be used.
Size and availability filtering that actually filters. Showing items that are out of stock in the selected size is the most reliable way to lose a customer in fashion.
Sort options that include something other than Featured. Best selling and price both signal honestly.
The card has to carry enough
Image, name, price, and the one differentiator for the category. In supplements that is servings or dose. In fashion it is available sizes. In food it is pack size.
A card with only an image and a price makes the visitor open products one at a time to compare, and each of those is a chance to leave.
The single highest-value addition to most collection cards is the per-unit price. It lets someone compare across pack sizes without opening anything.
The copy at the top earns the organic traffic
Two or three sentences above the grid, written for a person rather than a crawler. What is in this collection, who it suits, how to choose between the options.
This is what lets a collection page rank for a category term, and it is also what helps the visitor who arrived from search and does not know your range.
What breaks it
Infinite scroll with no pagination. Crawlers do not scroll, so products past the first load may never be discovered. Use pagination or load-more with real URLs.
A grid four deep on mobile. Two columns on a phone, with images large enough to judge.
Faceted URLs left crawlable. Every filter combination generating an indexable URL is how a 200-product store ends up with 40,000 pages of near-duplicates in the index.
Two numbers to look at
Collection to product click-through. If it is under 30% the cards are not carrying enough.
Filter usage. If nobody touches the filters, they are the wrong filters.
