Most Shopify SEO advice is a list of settings. Settings are the easy part and they are rarely why a store does not rank. Here is the version ordered by what actually moves the number.
1. Have pages worth ranking
The uncomfortable first item. A collection page with twelve products and no copy is competing against pages that answer a question. Category-level content — how to choose within the category, what the differences actually are — is the single highest-return SEO work on most stores, and almost nobody does it.
2. Fix the architecture before the tags
How your collections are organised decides what can rank at all. If customers search by occasion, material or concern and your store is organised only by product type, there is no page for the query to land on.
3. Product pages that say something
Manufacturer copy duplicated across every retailer who sells the same thing will not rank. Your own description, your own photography, and real reviews are what make a product page distinct enough to index.
4. Titles and descriptions written for the click
Title tag under about 60 characters, leading with the thing people search for rather than your brand. Meta description written to earn the click rather than to repeat the title. It does not affect ranking directly and it affects click-through, which does.
5. Internal links that reflect the business
Related products, collection cross-links, and genuinely useful links from content into commercial pages. Google uses internal linking to infer what you consider important, and most stores leave that entirely to the navigation.
6. Speed, on a real phone
7. Structured data
Product, breadcrumb and FAQ markup, matching what is visible on the page. Worth doing properly and worth nothing if it describes something the page does not say.
Markup that does not match the rendered page is a manual-action risk, not a clever trick. Every FAQ we publish is verified against the visible text for exactly this reason.
8. The things you cannot change on Shopify
Product URLs always sit under /products/, collections under /collections/. You cannot flatten that, and a store can rank perfectly well with it, so ignore anyone selling you a workaround.
Shopify also generates a collection URL for every tag combination, which can produce a large number of thin, near-duplicate URLs. Canonical tags handle most of it; worth checking that yours are in place.

What to do first
Pick the three collections that matter most commercially and write genuinely useful category content on them. That outperforms every settings change on this list, and it is the one most stores skip because it is work rather than configuration.
