Launching subscriptions is a week of configuration. Making them retain is the actual work, and the decisions that determine retention are made during that configuration week.
Whether you should
Subscriptions fit consumables with a predictable consumption rate. Coffee, supplements, skincare, pet food, razors.
They fit badly where consumption is irregular or where variety is the point. A customer who wants something different each time is a customer who will cancel rather than skip.
Test the demand before building: offer a manual reorder reminder and see how many take it. Cheap signal.
The app decision
Any of the established options will take recurring payments correctly. What differs is the customer portal and the API surface.
| App | Where it fits |
|---|---|
| Shopify Subscriptions | Simple, free, basic portal, fine to start |
| Recharge | Mature, deep features, highest cost |
| Skio | Good portal, modern, mid-market |
| Loop | Strong on retention tooling and cancel flows |
| Smartrr | Loyalty and subscription combined |
Start with the native app if your needs are simple. Migrating subscriptions between apps is genuinely painful — payment tokens, billing dates, contract states — so pick for where you will be in two years if you can see that far.
The four decisions that determine churn
Default frequency matched to real consumption. A sixty-serve tub does not run out in thirty days. Default to the actual duration, and the customer who wants faster can change it.
Skip, visible and easy. The alternative to a skip is a cancellation. Make skip the obvious option and put it in the email, not three clicks into an account area.
Frequency change, self-service. Most cancellations in consumable categories are timing complaints dressed as cancellations. "It arrives too often" is solved by a dropdown.
The discount, sized honestly. 10 to 15% in most consumable categories. Enough to be worth it, not so much that it cannibalises customers who would have reordered at full price.
The highest-leverage thing in the entire setup is the cancellation flow. Offer skip, pause and frequency change before the cancel button. A meaningful share of cancellations are solved by one of the three, and the ones that are not were genuinely leaving.
The flows that have to exist before launch
- Upcoming order notice, three days ahead, with skip and change links in the email body
- Payment failure recovery, with retries and a direct card-update link. Involuntary churn from expired cards is pure lost revenue and entirely preventable
- Onboarding for the first cycle, teaching the customer how to use the subscription itself
- A milestone message at the point most people cancel — usually cycle three
The number to watch
Retention at cycle three, by cohort. It predicts everything and it moves fast enough to act on. Monthly churn percentage averages away exactly the signal you need.

Default frequency and the cancel flow are where most of the retention is won, and both are decided before launch.
