Best A/B testing tools for Shopify, and the traffic you need to use any of them

The tool matters far less than whether your store can produce a readable result.

Best A/B testing tools for Shopify, and the traffic you need to use any of them

Start with the question that decides everything: can your store produce a result a test could read?

Under roughly 500 sessions a month on the page you want to test, no tool will help. Under a few hundred conversions a month across the store, expect tests to take a long time and settle rarely. That is not a tooling problem and no app fixes it.

The options

Shopify native A/B testing — built into the platform for theme and template testing. Free, no third-party script, no flicker. The right first move for most stores.

Intelligems — built specifically for Shopify, and notable for testing price and offers rather than only layout. Strong choice for DTC.

Visually — Shopify-focused, no-code editor, reasonable for teams without a developer.

Convert — general-purpose, mature statistics, good for teams that know what they are doing.

Optimizely / VWO — enterprise platforms. Capable, expensive, and more than most Shopify brands need.

What matters more than the tool

Deciding the metric before you ship. Usually add-to-cart rate on a product page test, because it accumulates events faster than orders and sits closest to the change.

Not stopping when it looks good. Peeking and stopping at the first happy moment is the most reliable way to manufacture a false positive.

Illustrative funnel. Test the step with the widest gap — it accumulates events fastest, so it is also the step where a test settles soonest.

Client-side testing tools can cause flicker — the original page appearing briefly before the variant swaps in. It hurts the variant's numbers and makes the test lie in the control's favour.

We wrote about how to read these results properly, using one of our own tests that proved nothing, in why most CRO case studies prove nothing.
