Speed work has an unusual property: the first tranche is nearly free and the last tranche is expensive. Knowing where that line sits saves a lot of money.
Do these first, at no cost
Delete apps you do not use. Every installed app can inject script whether or not you use its feature. Most stores we audit carry at least three that nobody would miss.
Compress your images. Shopify serves WebP automatically, but it cannot fix a 4000px hero uploaded at full resolution.
Remove duplicate tracking. It is common to find the same pixel installed twice — once by an app, once hard-coded during a campaign nobody cleaned up.
Turn off unused theme features. Sliders, animation libraries and icon fonts loading for sections you removed.
Then the paid work
| Performance auditWhere the time actually goes, ranked by cost to fix | $1,500 - $4,000 |
| Targeted optimisationScript deferral, image pipeline, render-blocking work | $3,000 - $10,000 |
| Theme rebuild for speedWhen the theme itself is the constraint | $10,000 - $25,000 |
| Headless front endWhen you have exhausted everything else | $40,000+ |
We would not sell you the last one without evidence that the first three have been done.
Why it is worth doing
The relationship is real, but be sceptical of anyone quoting a precise revenue figure for a specific improvement on your store — that number depends on your traffic mix, your device split and your category, and nobody can know it in advance.
Test on a mid-range Android over a throttled connection, not on your laptop over office wifi. The gap between those two is where most of your customers actually live.
The ceiling
A Liquid theme on Shopify has a floor it cannot go below, because the platform renders the page and the apps add to it. If you have removed the apps, fixed the images, deferred the scripts and still cannot hit your targets, that is when headless becomes a real conversation rather than an aspirational one.
We wrote about where that line actually sits in what headless Shopify costs.

We will tell you what is actually costing you the time, how much of it is free to fix, and whether paid work is justified yet.
