What does Shopify theme customisation cost, and where does it stop being cheap?

Theme customisation is the most efficient money in ecommerce until it is not, and the crossover is more predictable than most people expect.

The ranges

Small editsColours, fonts, a section reorder, minor layout work$200 - $1,500
New sectionsCustom sections your team can configure and reuse$1,500 - $5,000
Product page reworkThe page that carries the revenue, rebuilt properly$4,000 - $12,000
Deep customisationEnough change that you now own a fork of the theme$10,000 - $25,000

The last tier is where a custom build usually becomes the cheaper option over three years.

Where it stops being cheap

When you are fighting the theme. If each change requires undoing something the theme does, you are paying twice — once to build, once to override. That is the signal.

When updates become impossible. A heavily customised theme cannot take vendor updates without merge work. At that point you own the theme, whether or not you meant to.

When the team still cannot change anything. The point of a good theme is that marketing can run it. If every campaign needs a developer, the customisation has failed at its main job.

A useful rule: if the quote for customisation exceeds about half the cost of a custom build, build. You will get something designed for your catalogue rather than bent into shape, and it will be cheaper to change next year.

What is worth customising first

The product page, by a distance. It is where the ad spend lands and where the decision happens, and a reworked PDP on an otherwise standard theme outperforms a beautifully themed store with a generic one.

After that, the collection page — specifically filtering and how products are presented at a glance.

Almost nothing else moves revenue as reliably, which is why homepage redesigns feel productive and rarely show up in the numbers.
