Squarespace makes a better-looking website with less effort. Shopify runs a better shop. Both statements are true and the decision is which of those you are actually buying.
When Squarespace is right
A small catalogue attached to a brand site. A studio selling a dozen prints, a restaurant selling vouchers, a consultant selling a course. The commerce is a feature of the site rather than the point of it.
Design matters more than operations. Squarespace templates are genuinely good and a non-designer can get a handsome result without help.
You are testing whether the product sells at all. Launch cheaply, learn, move when the answer is yes.
| Squarespace | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| Design out of the box | Excellent | Good, more effort |
| Catalogue scale | Comfortable to ~100 SKUs | Thousands |
| Checkout | Adequate | Among the best in the industry |
| App ecosystem | Small | The deepest in the category |
| Shipping and tax logic | Basic | Deep |
| Finding a developer | Harder | Straightforward |
| Monthly cost | Lower | Higher, plus apps |
Where Squarespace stops
Variants and inventory. Anything beyond simple size and colour gets awkward fast, and inventory across locations is not really there.
Shipping rules. Weight bands, zones, free-shipping thresholds by region. Shopify treats these as first-class; Squarespace treats them as settings.
Integrations. Your 3PL, your ERP, your subscription platform, your reviews app. The Shopify version exists and is mature; the Squarespace version frequently does not exist.
Checkout optimisation. Shop Pay alone is a conversion advantage you inherit rather than build.
The practical signal that you have outgrown it: you are doing operational work manually because the platform cannot express a rule. That is the point where the subscription difference stops mattering.
Migrating
Straightforward as migrations go — catalogues are usually small and URL structures simple. Map the product and collection URLs before building anything and the traffic carries across.
