Wix is better than its reputation among developers, and for a small store it is a reasonable choice. The honest comparison is about what happens in year two.
What Wix does well
Editing. The drag-and-drop editor is genuinely the easiest in the category, and a non-technical owner can maintain the site.
Price. Lower monthly cost, and more included before you reach for apps.
All-in-one. Site, blog, bookings, email and store in one subscription with one login.
Where the gap shows
Catalogue depth. Variants, options and inventory logic are thinner. Fine at fifty SKUs, strained at five hundred.
Integrations. This is the real one. Whatever you need — 3PL, subscriptions, reviews, attribution, a PIM — the Shopify integration exists, is maintained, and someone has already hit the edge cases. The Wix equivalent frequently does not exist.
Hiring. The pool of experienced Wix ecommerce developers is small. If your relationship with whoever built it ends, replacing them is harder than it should be.
Checkout. Shopify Checkout and Shop Pay represent years of testing you inherit.
| Wix | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of editing | Best in class | Good |
| Monthly cost | Lower | Higher |
| Catalogue depth | Light | Deep |
| Integrations | Limited | The deepest available |
| Checkout | Standard | Among the best |
| Hiring help | Harder | Straightforward |
The cost of a platform is not its subscription. It is the operational work it cannot automate and the integrations you end up doing by hand. That bill arrives monthly and never appears in a comparison table.
The honest decision
If the store is a side of the business and will stay that way, Wix is fine and the money saved is real.
If the store is the business — or is intended to become it — the integration gap is what decides it, and it widens rather than narrows as you grow.

If it is a design change, stay. If it is an integration, a shipping rule or a variant structure, that is the gap and it does not close.
