Triple Whale vs Northbeam: attribution, and why they disagree

Two models, same week, different answers. Knowing why is more useful than picking one.

Triple Whale vs Northbeam: attribution, and why they disagree

Both exist because platform-reported numbers are unreliable and Shopify only tells you last click. Neither gives you truth, and understanding that is the most useful thing in this comparison.

How they differ in method

Triple Whale leans on a first-party pixel and post-purchase survey data, with a dashboard built for daily decisions. Easier to adopt, faster to read, and more opinionated.

Northbeam leans harder on statistical modelling across channels. More rigorous, more configuration, and aimed at larger spenders who will act on the model rather than glance at it.

Illustrative economics. Attribution tools exist to make this picture accurate per channel; neither of them changes the underlying number.

Why they disagree

Because they are models, and models have assumptions. Attribution window length, whether view-through counts, how credit is distributed across touches, how they handle returning customers. Change any of those and the same week produces a different answer.

If two tools disagree about a channel, neither is lying. They are answering slightly different questions. Pick one, learn its assumptions, and judge trends rather than absolute numbers.

The cheaper thing to do first

Post-purchase surveys. One question at checkout — how did you hear about us — gives you self-reported attribution that is biased in different ways from the models, and the comparison between the two is more informative than either alone.

It costs almost nothing and most brands skip it in favour of a subscription.

What to actually decide with

Incrementality, not attribution. The question worth answering is whether spend on a channel produces sales that would not otherwise have happened — and the only clean way to find out is to turn it off in a region or for a period and watch what happens to total revenue.

No attribution platform answers that, and both will present a number that looks like it does.

Talk it through

The gap between those two is usually the real question, and it does not always need a subscription to answer.
