People who use site search convert at several times the rate of people who browse, because they have already decided what they want. A zero-result search is therefore among the most expensive events on your store — and the report listing them is the most actionable thing in your analytics.
Why it happens
Customers use different words than you do. You sell a "hydrating serum"; they search for "moisturiser". Native search matches text, so it returns nothing and they leave.
Product titles are written for brand, not for search. A poetic product name with no category word in it is invisible to anyone who does not already know it.
Typos. Native predictive search handles some and not all.
The product genuinely does not exist. Also valuable — that is demand data.
The fixes that cost nothing
Read the report. Shopify reports search terms with zero results. Start there, not with an app.
Add synonyms. Most search apps support them and so do several themes. Map the words customers use to the words you use.
Rewrite product titles to include the category. The thing people search for should appear in the title.
Use tags and metafields deliberately. They feed search and filtering. Most stores use them for internal organisation rather than for how customers shop.
A meaningful share of the stores we audit could halve their zero-result rate without installing anything. The search was never the problem — the data it was searching was.
What a zero-result page should do
Never a dead end. Show the closest matches, the most popular products, and a prompt to browse. A blank page with "no results found" is an exit.
When an app is justified
Above roughly a thousand SKUs, or when filtering across many attributes is the real requirement, or when you need to merchandise results — pin products for particular queries, boost in-stock items, demote low margin. We compared the main options in Algolia vs Searchanise.
Below that, fix the inputs first.
Talk it through
Send us your zero-result search report.
We will tell you how much of it is a synonym and title problem you can fix for free, and whether a search platform is actually justified.
